MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Ryder
System, Inc. (NYSE: R), a leader in commercial
transportation and supply
chain management solutions, today announced it was honored with a SmartWay®
Excellence Award – in the Logistics Management, Large Carrier
category – from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as
a true industry leader in freight supply chain environmental performance
and energy efficiency. Ryder was recognized for top environmental
performance and efficiency in providing more sustainable transportation
management solutions hauling freight with SmartWay carriers.
“Ryder’s best-in-class vehicle technologies, logistics engineering, and
maintenance and fueling services offer our customers industry-leading
performance, optimized fuel efficiency, and reduced carbon emissions,”
said Ryder Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Robert Sanchez. “We
continue to play an important role in advancing the environmental
sustainability of commercial transportation and logistics, particularly
in North America.”
Ryder purchases approximately $4 billion annually in outside
transportation services, and a carrier’s SmartWay participation is a
selection factor when Ryder sources these services. In 2012, SmartWay
carriers accounted for 89 percent of all freight miles managed by Ryder.
Ryder was one of 55 companies, representing approximately one percent of
the Partnerships’ 3,000-plus Partners, to receive this distinction. The
Excellence Awardees were honored at the Council of Supply Chain
Management Professionals annual conference held in Denver, Colo.
“EPA is pleased to recognize the 2013 SmartWay Excellence Award
recipients. I commend Ryder for its superior environmental performance
and leadership in advancing freight sector efficiency," said Gina
McCarthy, EPA Administrator. “Their commitment is helping lead the
freight industry to a more sustainable future."
EPA based its selection on information received from partners' annual
assessment tool submissions and semi-finalist applications, aiming to
recognize approximately the top one percent of Partners that demonstrate
leadership in support of SmartWay’s environmental goals. Awardees in the
Logistics Management category were required to demonstrate that they
traveled more than 200 million annual vehicle miles, that more than 80
percent of miles shipped were with SmartWay Partners, and that they
achieved top environmental performance based on 50% CO2 + 25% NOx + 25%
PM g/ton-mile outputs.

achievements (28 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, 478,000 tons
nitrogen oxides, and 22,000 tons of particulate matter reduced so far)
help protect the health and well-being of citizens while contributing to
our nation’s economic and energy security.
