Ryder’s Green Practices and Best-in-Class Supply Chain Execution
Garner Recognition in Food and Beverage Industry
MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Ryder
System, Inc. (NYSE: R), a leader in commercial
fleet management, dedicated
transportation, and supply
chain solutions, today announced it has been named one of 2015’s
“Top Green Providers” by Food Logistics. The “Top Green
Providers” list focuses on sustainability in the global food supply
chain with profiles of companies that are exceeding industry standards
in their sector.
TWEET THIS: @FoodLogistics Names Ryder a Top Green Provider
This year’s list includes grocers, third party logistics providers, cold
storage providers, pallet and packaging manufacturers, software and
technology companies, and others whose products and services are
elevating sustainability to a “competitive advantage” in the industry.
Ryder’s inclusion on the list reflects the Company’s leadership in
providing thousands of food and beverage companies – including the top
10 U.S. food and beverage companies according to FORTUNE – with services
including green transportation and logistics solutions to help them meet
their sustainability goals. Distilled spirits maker Bacardi is one such
example of a company that recently teamed up with Ryder to promote
sustainable shipping practices. The collaboration includes partnering
with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Transport
Partnership program promoting vehicles equipped with clean, fuel
efficient SmartWay Verified Technologies.
“Ryder’s sustainability initiatives continue to grow and evolve,” said
Darin Cooprider, Vice President and General Manager of Consumer Packaged
Goods for Ryder Supply Chain Solutions. “We know that sustainability
plays an especially vital role in the food supply chain, which is why
Ryder takes extra measures to ensure that food is safely and sustainably
delivered from source to shelf.”
Ryder engages with customers to help them “green” their supply chains by
focusing on carbon reduction in three critical areas: network design,
facilities and building use, and transportation. By designing a supply
chain network with the reduction of the carbon footprint as one of our
primary focuses, Ryder advises customers on factors such as the location
of distribution centers, miles to be traveled, amount of inventory, and
size and number of facilities included in the network. For the use of
buildings and facilities, Ryder offers lighting efficiencies,
cutting-edge energy technologies, alternative use of by-products, and
other strategies to reduce waste and carbon emissions. In
transportation, customers are able to take advantage of Ryder’s
engineering expertise optimizing shipments, routes, and modes.
Ryder is also the leader in natural gas vehicles solutions for the
commercial transportation industry, with more than 30 million miles of
experience, 17 NGV maintenance facilities, and more than 3,000 NGV
trained technicians. The Company operates Liquefied to Compressed
Natural Gas (LCNG) fuel stations at its Fontana and Orange, Calif.,
service locations. Willow Run Foods, Inc. is an example of a Ryder
customer experiencing the benefits of investing in CNG vehicles with
Ryder. The food distributor uses the vehicles in New York City, Long
Island, and northern New Jersey, helping to offset emissions that would
normally be generated in such a high-traffic region. Since the vehicles
have a 550-mile range per tank on a single fill-up, drivers are able to
complete a full delivery route from the company’s distribution center
without having to refuel. Willow Run is expected to save approximately
$100,000 annually, depending on diesel fuel fluctuations.
“The 2015 Top Green Providers list is our largest ever, signaling the
growing importance of sustainability throughout the global food and
beverage supply chain,” notes Lara L. Sowinski, editor-in-chief for Food
Logistics. “Applying sustainable practices in the agriculture,
transportation, warehousing and retailing sectors is critical in
addressing the environmental and business demands of the 21st
century, particularly for our industry.”
Companies on this year’s “Top Green Providers” list will be profiled in
the June 2015 issue of Food Logistics, as well as online at www.foodlogistics.com.
